Overview

Up to now, the College of Food Science and Technology (CFST) has established the Department of Food Science and Engineering, the Department of Food Nutrition and Safety, and the Department of Food Fermentation and Bioengineering. It has four undergraduate programs:

Ø food science and engineering,

Ø food quality and safety,

Ø bioengineering,

Ø as well as the newly approved "Food Nutrition and Health" major in 2025.

The first three have been selected as national-level first-class undergraduate programs.

CFST currently has 5 master's degree granting programs in the disciplines of food science and engineering, public health and preventive medicine, bioengineering, biology and medicine, food and nutrition. The former three master’s degree granting programs are authorized to confer academic master's degrees in first-level disciplines.

We also have 4 doctoral degree granting programs in the disciplines of food science and engineering, public health and preventive medicine (jointly established with the college of public health), bioengineering, and biology and medicine. And the former three doctoral degree granting programs are authorized to confer doctoral degrees in first-level disciplines.

In addition, the college has established a postdoctoral research station in Food Science and Engineering, aimed at attracting exceptional postdoctoral researchers from both domestic and international backgrounds.

CFST now has 88 full-time teachers, including 48 professors and 31 associate professors. Over 70% of them have more than one year of foreign study or work experience. Currently, there are about 2501 students, of which master's and doctoral students account for more than 55%.

After nearly 40 years of development, the food science and engineering discipline at Nanchang University has made a significant improvement. In 2017, the fourth round of national discipline assessments showed that the discipline of food science and engineering at CFST was rated as an A-level discipline, ranking third nationally in the field of food science. In the fifth round of discipline assessments, we achieved another historic breakthrough. As of May 2025, the Food Science Discipline of Nanchang University has been ranked 7th globally in the "US News Global University Rankings" and 8th globally in the "ARWU World University Rankings by Subject". As of May 2025, the agricultural science discipline at Nanchang University (with a focus on food) entered the top 0.214‰ in the ESI global rankings.

CFST has always attached great importance to international cooperation and exchanges, and has established good cooperative relations with universities and research institutes in Germany, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, and other countries. The China-German cooperation is hailed as a model of intergovernmental cooperation. CFST has been approved four times in a row as an innovative talent international cooperation training project by the China Scholarship Council. CFST has signed agreements with the University of Guelph in Canada, Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, and the University of Vigo in Spain for joint training of doctoral students. CFST conducts academic exchanges with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on a regular basis. It has also held summer student exchange programs with universities such as South Korea's Yonsei University and Japan's Okayama Prefectural University for many years.
